Please be aware that there is no sound fromthe engine when the vehicle is being poweredby the electric motor and it may be difficult todetect by children, pedestrians, cyclists andanimals. This is especially true at low speeds.

High-voltage electrical current WARNING
A number of electrical components in theXC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid usehigh-voltage current and can be extremelydangerous if handled incorrectly. These com-ponents and any orange wiring in the vehiclemay only be handled by trained and qualifiedVolvo service technicians.

Hybrid-unique functions
Drive modes
Different drive modes can be selected while driv-ing, e.g., electric power only or a combination ofelectric and gasoline power. The vehicle calcu-lates the optimal combination of drivability, drivingexperience, environmental impact and fuel econ-omy for the selected drive mode. See also thearticle "Drive modes" for additional information.

Instrument panel
In certain driving situations, hybrid-unique infor-mation may be displayed in the instrument panel,such as: a hybrid battery gauge (current chargelevel), the current drive mode, a symbol that illu-minates when the gasoline engine is being used,a Hybrid Guide and the level of energy regenera-tion.

Preconditioning
In order to function optimally, the hybrid battery(and its related electrical systems) and the gaso-line engine (and its drive systems) should be atthe correct operating temperature. The hybridbattery's capacity is reduced considerably if it is
too cold or hot. Preconditioning prepares thevehicle's drive systems and passenger compart-ment before the vehicle is driven to help reducewear and energy consumption.
Charging the hybrid battery
CAUTION
Never connect the charging cable if there is arisk of thunderstorms/lightning.
The XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid uses alithium-ion battery that can be charged in severalways:
•A charging cable can be connected from thevehicle to a 110-volt AC socket. Chargingtime depends on the strength of the current.
•When the brakes are applied lightly, the elec-tric motor is used for engine braking, duringwhich the vehicle's kinetic energy is conver-ted into electric current that is used to helprecharge the hybrid battery.
•The hybrid battery is also recharged to a cer-tain extent when the gasoline engine is inoperation.

•The air conditioning may be switched offtemporarily.
•After a prolonged period of driving, do notturn off the engine immediately after stop-ping.
•The engine cooling fan commonly continuesto run for several minutes after the enginehas been turned off.

WARNING
The cooling fan (located at the front of theengine compartment, behind the radiator) maystart or continue to operate (for up to6 minutes) after the engine has beenswitched off.

Winter driving
Check your vehicle before the approach of coldweather.
The following advice is worth noting:
•Make sure that the engine coolant contains50 percent antifreeze. Any other mixture willreduce freeze protection. This gives protec-tion against freezing down to –31 °F(–35 °C). The use of "recycled" antifreeze isnot approved by Volvo. Different types ofantifreeze must not be mixed.
•Volvo recommends using only genuine Volvoantifreeze in your vehicle's radiator.
•Try to keep the fuel tank well filled – thishelps prevent the formation of condensationin the tank. In addition, in extremely coldweather conditions it is worthwhile to addfuel line de-icer before refueling.
•The viscosity of the engine oil is important.Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting as well as decreasingfuel consumption while the engine is warm-ing up. Full synthetic 0W-30 oil is recom-mended for driving in areas with sustainedlow temperatures.
•The load placed on the battery is greater dur-ing the winter since the windshield wipers,lighting, etc., are used more often. Moreover,the capacity of the battery decreases as thetemperature drops. In very cold weather, apoorly charged battery can freeze and be
damaged. It is therefore advisable to checkthe state of charge more frequently andspray an anti-rust oil on the battery posts.
•Volvo recommends the use of snow tires onall four wheels for winter driving.
•To prevent the washer fluid reservoir fromfreezing, add washer solvents containingantifreeze. This is important since dirt is oftensplashed on the windshield during winterdriving, requiring the frequent use of thewashers and wipers. Volvo Washer Solventshould be diluted as follows: Down to 14 °F(–10 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 4 partswater Down to 5 °F (–15 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 3 parts water Down to 0 °F(–18 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 2 partswater Down to –18 °F (–28 °C): 1 partwasher solvent and 1 part water.
•Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
•Avoid using de-icing sprays as they cancause damage to the locks.

NOTE
The capacity of the hybrid battery diminishessomewhat with age and use, which couldresult in increased use of the gasoline engineand consequently, slightly higher fuel con-sumption.
Charging is indicated in three ways:
•Charge module (the unit that is plugged intothe wall socket): The blue indicator light onthe cable's charge module will flash red sev-eral times when the unit is plugged into awall socket while a safety check is being per-formed and will then glow steadily blue toindicate that the charger is ready to use.
•A green indicator light in the vehicle's charg-ing socket will flash green while the batteryis charging and will glow steadily green whenthe hybrid battery is fully charged. The blueindicator light in the charge module will alsoflash while charging is underway and willglow steadily blue when charging is comple-ted.
•A gauge in the instrument panel will alsoindicate the battery's charge level.
The hybrid battery charging process also chargesthe vehicle's start battery.
If the hybrid battery's temperature is below –13 ºF (–10 ºC) or above +104 ºF (+40 ºC), someof the vehicle's functions may be reduced or not
be available at all (e.g., drive mode may not beavailable).
The electric motor cannot be used if the hybridbattery's temperature is too low or too high. If thePURE drive mode is selected, the gasolineengine will be used.

Temperature control
During charging, if the temperature in the charg-ing cable becomes too high and reaches a criticallimit, charging will be interrupted.

CAUTION
If charging is interrupted repeatedly, have thecharging cable and the vehicle's chargingsystem inspected by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
Charging using the gasoline engine
Current is generated to charge the hybrid battery, suchas light braking and when engine braking on down-slopes
Using the B gear mode when driving on down-slopes will also recharge the hybrid battery.
The hybrid battery can also be charged by thegasoline engine. During light braking, the batteryis recharged.

When the hybrid battery's charge level is low, thegasoline engine will start more often to help con-serve electrical energy. Charge the battery withthe charging cable as soon as possible.

PURE
This mode activates the electric motor only withas low energy consumption as possible and thelowest possible carbon dioxide emissions.
Ground clearance will be lowered to help reducewind resistance and certain climate system func-tions will be reduced.
Pure mode is available when the hybrid battery issufficiently charged. If the level gets too low, thegasoline engine will start.
The gasoline engine will also start:
•If the vehicle's speed goes above approx.78 mph (125 km/h)
•If the driver wants more response than theelectric motor alone can provide
•If factors such as cold weather, etc., affectthe system or components
To restart the climate system functions that havebeen reduced in the mode, press the AUTO ordefroster buttons.
In order to return to full functionality for all of thesystems that may be affected by Pure mode,select another drive mode or adapt the climatesystem functions using the INDIVIDUAL mode.
OFF ROAD
This mode helps maximize the vehicle's capacityto traverse difficult terrain or poor roads.
In OFF ROAD, ground clearance is maximized,the steering is light, All Wheel Drive and HillDescent Control are activated and a compassand altimeter will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.
This drive mode can only be activated at lowspeeds (the permissible speed range will beshown on the speedometer). At higher speeds,OFF ROAD mode will be cancelled and AWD willbe activated.
This mode is not intended for normal streetdriving.

CAUTION
OFF ROAD drive mode may not be used ifthe vehicle is towing a trailer without an elec-trical connection. This could result in damageto the pneumatic suspension system's bel-lows.
Due to the increased ground clearance, if theOFF ROAD mode was selected when the enginewas switched off, it will also restart in this mode.

AWD
This mode offers improved traction using four-wheel drive and is intended primarily for low-speed driving on slippery surfaces. However, it
also helps increase directional stability at higherspeeds.
In this mode, both the electric motor and the gas-oline engine are used continuously, which resultsin higher fuel consumption.
POWER
Power mode is intended for sportier, more activedriving.
This mode maximizes the combined effects ofthe electric motor and the gasoline engine andprovides power to all four wheels. Response topressure on the accelerator pedal is more imme-diate and the transmission shifts up at higherspeeds. Steering response is also more immedi-ate, the suspension is stiffer and lower groundclearance reduces body roll when cornering.
In this mode, both the electric motor and the gas-oline engine are used continuously, which resultsin higher fuel consumption.

Loading specifications
Properly loading your vehicle will provide maxi-mum return of vehicle design performance.

Weight designations
Before loading your vehicle, familiarize yourselfwith the following terms for determining yourvehicle's weight ratings, with or without a trailer,from the vehicle's Federal/Canadian Motor Vehi-cle Safety Standards (FMVSS/CMVSS) label, andthe vehicle's tire information placard:

Curb weight
The weight of the vehicle including a full tank offuel and all standard equipment. It does notinclude passengers, cargo, or optional equipment.

Capacity weight
All weight added to the curb weight, includingcargo and optional equipment. When towing,trailer hitch tongue load is also part of cargoweight.

Permissible axle weight
The maximum allowable weight that can be car-ried by a single axle (front or rear). These num-bers are shown on the Federal/Canadian MotorVehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS/CMVSS) label.The total load on each axle must never exceed itsmaximum permissible weight.

Gross vehicle weight (GVW)
The vehicle's curb weight + cargo + passengers.
Steps for Determining Correct Load
Limit
1. Locate the statement "the combined weightof occupants and cargo should never exceedXXX kg or XXX lbs." on your vehicle's plac-ard.
2. Determine the combined weight of the driverand passengers that will be riding in yourvehicle.
3. Subtract the combined weight of the driverand passengers from XXX kg or XXX lbs.
4. The resulting figure equals the availableamount of cargo and luggage load capacity.For example, if the "XXX" amount equals1400 lbs. and there will be five 150 lb. pas-sengers in your vehicle, the amount of availa-ble cargo and luggage load capacity is650 lbs. (1400 – 750 (5 × 150) = 650 lbs.)
5. Determine the combined weight of luggageand cargo being loaded on the vehicle. Thatweight may not safely exceed the availablecargo and luggage load capacity calculatedin Step 4.
6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, loadfrom your trailer will be transferred to yourvehicle. Consult this manual to determinehow this reduces the available cargo and lug-gage load capacity of your vehicle.
WARNING
•Exceeding the permissible axle weight,gross vehicle weight, or any other weightrating limits can cause tire overheatingresulting in permanent deformation orcatastrophic failure.
•Do not use replacement tires with lowerload carrying capacities than the tires thatwere original equipment on the vehiclebecause this will lower the vehicle's GVWrating. Use only tires with the correct loadcarrying capacity. Consult your Volvoretailer for information.

CAUTION
•Snow chains should not be used onwheels larger than 19".
•Always follow the chain manufacturer'sinstallation instructions carefully. Installchains as tightly as possible andretighten periodically.
•Check local regulations regarding the useof snow chains before installing.
•Use single-sided snow chains only.
•Never exceed the chain manufacturer'sspecified maximum speed limit. (Underno circumstances should you exceed31 mph (50 km/h).
•Avoid bumps, holes or sharp turns whendriving with snow chains.
•The handling of the vehicle can beadversely affected when driving withchains. Avoid fast or sharp turns as wellas locked wheel braking.
Checking tire inflation pressure
Correct tire inflation pressure helps improve driv-ing stability, save fuel and increase the servicelife of the tires.

WARNING
•Under-inflation is the most commoncause of tire failure and may result insevere tire cracking, tread separation, or"blow-out," with unexpected loss of vehi-cle control and increased risk of injury.
•Under-inflated tires reduce the load car-rying capacity of your vehicle.

Cold tires
Inflation pressure should be checked when thetires are cold.
The tires are considered to be cold whenthey have the same temperature as the sur-rounding (ambient) air.
This temperature is normally reached after thevehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours.
After driving a distance of approximately 1 mile(1.6 km), the tires are considered to be hot. If youhave to drive farther than this distance to pumpyour tire(s), check and record the tire pressurefirst and add the appropriate air pressure whenyou get to the pump.
When weather temperature changes occur, tireinflation pressures also change. A 10-degree
temperature drop causes a corresponding dropof 1 psi (7 kPa) in inflation pressure. Check yourtire pressures frequently and adjust them to theproper pressure, which can be found on the vehi-cle's tire information placard or certification label.
If checking tire pressure when the tire is hot,never "bleed" or reduce air pressure. The tiresare hot from driving and it is normal for pressuresto increase above recommended cold pressures.A hot tire at or below recommended cold inflationpressure could be significantly under-inflated.

A tire inflation pressure placard is located on thedriver's side B-pillar (the structural member at theside of the vehicle, at the rear of the driver's dooropening). This placard indicates the designation

Support battery
Vehicles equipped with Start/Stop are equippedwith two 12-volt batteries.
In addition to a heavy-duty start battery, modelswith Start/Stop also have a support battery thatprovides extra current during the Start/Stopfunction's start sequence.
The following table shows the specifications forthe support battery:

•When replacing the start battery or supportbattery in a vehicle with Start/Stop, anAbsorbed Glass Mat (AGM) must be used.
•The greater the current consumption in thevehicle, the more the generator has to oper-ate and the battery is charged. This increasesfuel consumption.
•When the start battery's charge is below theminimum permitted level, the Start/Stopfunction will be disabled.
When the Start/Stop function is temporarily disa-bled due to high current consumption:
•The engine will auto-start, even if the brakepedal is depressed.
The support battery does not normally requiredmore service than the start battery. If questionsarise, consult a Volvo retailer or trained and quali-fied Volvo service technician.
CAUTION
When connecting an external start battery ora battery charger, the Start/Stop function maybe temporarily disabled if the negative termi-nal on the vehicle's start battery is used toconnect an external start battery or a batterycharger. Only the negative connection pointin the engine compartment may be used as aground point.

•Dry the car with a clean chamois andremember to clean the drain holes in thedoors and rocker panels.
•Tar spots can be removed with tar removerafter the car has been washed.
•A stiff-bristle brush and lukewarm soapywater can be used to clean the wiper blades.Frequent cleaning of the windshield andwiper blades improves visibility considerablyand also helps prolong the service life of thewiper blades.
•Wash off the dirt from the underside (wheelhousings, fenders, etc).
•In areas of high industrial fallout, more fre-quent washing is recommended.

CAUTION
•During high pressure washing, the spraymouthpiece must never be closer to thevehicle than 13" (30 cm). Do not sprayinto the locks.
•Dirt, snow, etc., on the headlights canreduce lighting capacity considerably.Clean the headlights regularly, for exam-ple when refueling.
Special laminated panoramic roof cau-tions:
•Always close the laminated panoramicroof and sun shade before washing yourvehicle.
•Never use abrasive cleaning agents onthe laminated panoramic roof.
•Never use wax on the rubber sealsaround the laminated panoramic roof.

NOTE
When washing the car, remember to removedirt from the drain holes in the doors and sills.

Automatic car washes
•We do NOT recommend washing your car inan automatic wash during the first few
months (because the paint will not havehardened sufficiently).
•An automatic wash is a simple and quick wayto clean your car, but it is worth rememberingthat it may not be as thorough as when youyourself go over the car with sponge andwater. Keeping the underbody clean is mostimportant, especially in the winter. Someautomatic washers do not have facilities forwashing the underbody.
NOTE
Condensation may form temporarily on theinside of the lenses of exterior lights such asheadlights or taillights. This is normal and thelights are designed to withstand moisture.Normally, condensation will dissipate after thelights have been on for a short time.
